The Gold Standard

Penguins defenseman Kris Letang is having a sensational season, and he's gaining recognition around North America as a serious contender for the Norris Trophy, which goes to the league's top player at his position.

So is Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom who, at age 40, already has six of those trophies on his mantle, and looks like the early favorite to earn No. 7.

Letang certainly wouldn't disagree, saying today that Lidstrom is in "totally another class," compared to the rest of the league's defensemen.

“He’s smart, he supports the puck, he reads the play really well,” Letang said. “Let’s say he’s getting forechecked. He’s not going to read only the first guy coming at him; he’s going to read the three guys coming at him.

“He’s always going to play the puck in a good position, and he never gets beaten. He’s so tough to play against.

“As a complete defenseman, he’s the role model for everybody.”
