Gonchar's power-play replacement up for grabs (article)

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma made it clear Friday that Sergei Gonchar's replacement on the top power play unit is still up for grabs. Bylsma said Alex Goligoski and Kris Letang and newcomer Paul Martin were all under consideration and will receive the opportunity to quarterback the top power unit at some point this preseason. Martin doesn't possess a booming shot from the point but did register 70 career power-play points in 400 games with New Jersey. Goligoski (25 career power-play points) and Letang (27 career power-play points) also will be in the mix, with no one emerging as a clear favorite yet.

• Speaking of the power play, Bylsma acknowledged that he and assistant Todd Reirden are sharing the responsibilities of coaching the unit this year.

• Penguins captain Sidney Crosby returned to practice Friday at Consol Energy Center after missing the third period against Detroit and Thursday's practice with a sore hip. He skated without any sign of discomfort.

• Big names such as Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury and Brooks Orpik did not play in Columbus. Bylsma acknowledged that playing his big names in the first game ever at the Consol Energy Center was important.

• Penguins center Max Talbot laughed when asked about the team's third line Friday in Columbus. Talbot was scheduled to skate on a line with right wing Arron Asham and left wing Matt Cooke, a line sure to agitate, even in a preseason game.

Article/Interview with Kris Letang

With Sergei Gonchar gone, Kris Letang figures to have an elevated role on defense this season as he enters the first year of a new contract. He spoke today about the re-tooled defense, new teammate Arron Asham, Jordan Staal and the power play.

Does the defense have something to prove this season:

"Yeah I think we want to prove we’re a good defensive team. We lost Gonchar and everybody thinks we’re going to be worse. But we’re a good group. We’re mobile but I think we have a lot to prove a lot."

On adding defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek:

"It brings a lot of depth. I think we’re a better all around defensive squad now."

On Todd Reirden replacing Mike Yeo as the coach of the defensemen:

"Todd used to play the game as a defenseman so he knows what we’re going through. We look forward to working with him."

Is he happy he doesn't have to face Arron Asham on the forecheck any longer:

"Yeah, that’s the first thing I said when he signed with us because it was a relief. When you play against him, he’s really tough. He won’t give you any chance to get rid of the puck."

On losing Staal:

"He’s a really important player. He’s one of the best two-way players in the league. It’s important for other guys to step in and step up."

Will he take over as the power-play quarterback:

"If they let me I will. For now, we don’t know anything. We don’t have anything set up. Obviously it’s there for anyone who wants to take it. It’s a big part of our team. I might jump in and do that. I had a strong playoff last year. I think I should build on that."

Kris Letang part of an article

Kris Letang looked the part, dressed in a polo shirt and dress shorts, but his shoes gave away how he views his golf skills.

“I’m not a golfer at all, I’m in flip flops all day long,” Letang said. “But it’s fun to be with all the sponsors.”

NHL Number 58 Kris Letang

Kris Letang, the defenseman from Montreal, Quebec, has worn jersey number 58 in his first four NHL seasons. He was taken in the third round of the 2005 NHL draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, and saw his first NHL ice time during the 2006-07 season, albeit briefly (7 games).

Letang played in 63 regular season games his second year in the league, putting up 17 points with 6 goals (3 of them game-winners). The following year would see him again score 3 game-winning regular season goals, this time out of 10 total, matched with 23 assists.

While his goal-scoring may have dipped a bit in 2009-10 (3 regular season goals), he continued to set up his teammates, notching a career-high 24 assists. Kris would have 13 points (4 goals and 9 assists) during the playoffs that saw the Penguins win the 2008-09 Stanley Cup Championship.

Did you know.................Letang won the Emile Bouchard Trophy as the QMJHL's best defenseman in 2007?
